Bulgaria ranks last in Europe in recycling sector. For the next eight years the country has to build advanced systems and to recover at least half of discarded plastic, glass and metal.

Every year Bulgaria generates about 3 million tonnes of waste. In our country there are 24 plants for separation of the waste where the waste for recycling is separated from these which can not be reused. The organizations that separated the general household waste are only 7. The people in Sofia throw daily 1000 tons of waste.

In Bulgaria there is no information about the amount of recycled waste. Eurostat’s data shows that in our country almost all quantity of waste goes to landfill. Under our new law on waste management and European requirements in the country should have advanced and technical innovative systems for waste – composting facilities and separation, new landfills. Must recycle much of the waste and dispose minimum.

“As currently there are 30 regional systems, subject to other financing and construction,” said Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Ivelina Vasileva. We are currently building facilities in 12 regions, the assessment of the projects is still 6, but there are still municipalities that do not have ready plans.
